Construction Update - February 2015

The structure of the Facilities Management Centre (FMC) at the Lend Lease construction site for the Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital is taking shape. Scaffolding has been removed from the eastern side of the building that is visible from Kawana Way, exposing the structure of the building. From here the final cladding and sun-screening will be added. The remaining scaffolding on the western side will be removed over the next couple of months. The set of four main diesel generators have now been installed and are the red boxes visible from the roof.

On the northern side of the building, the foundations are complete for the two Thermal Energy Storage Tanks (TES), these will start to take shape over the next few months. Standing almost 23 metres tall, the tanks will hold 4.6 million litres of chilled water, which will be used to reduce the hospital peak energy load during the day and therefore the total energy costs.

Moving across to the eight level multi-deck carpark (P1) that is adjacent to FMC, progress has been made this month across levels one, two and three. Blockwork has also commenced on the ground floor.

Significant progress has also been made on the Main Hospital Building (MHB), with level five floor slab one third complete and the first slab of level six (the top level of the MHB) poured. The structural completion of the MHB is scheduled for April this year.

As you walk through the ground floor of the MHB, the internal corridors and rooms in the future emergency department are increasingly evident. The internal fit-out continues in the MHB East Building in the Cancer Care Centre that will provide tertiary medical oncology, clinical hematology and radiation oncology services.

The fa├žade framing and cladding now reaches to level two and installation of the full height glazing that commenced late last year is continuing. The glazing can be seen from the interior of the MHB East Building facing the main hospital street and forms part of the Cancer Care Centre.
Along the roof the MHB a myriad of pipes and trays required for services such as IT and medical gases are being installed.

At the northern most end of the construction site and adjacent to the private hospital, works have progressed on the Outdoor Room and The Hub's auditorium. The Hub forms part of the Skills, Academic and Research Centre (SARC), a partnership between the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health service and a number of leading providers of tertiary education and research.

The outdoor spaces will provide an opportunity for visitors to attend conferences and utilise the outdoor room and auditorium for education and training purposes. The ground floor slabs have now been poured, with the first section of auditorium walls installed.

Construction parking will be at a premium on the site from February, with additional paid visitor parking available at the multi-storey carpark (P2), located off Kawana Way on the Kawana Health Campus.

Contractors will have access to additional parking at Gate 3 off Kawana Way, with extra parking bays now available to accommodate the ramp up of daily construction workers on site.

Works will commence on the Mental Health Unit (MHU) in early February. A single storey independent building located adjacent to the construction carpark, the MHU will provide mostly short term psychiatric care for patients from paediatric to Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit. The MHU will open with 42 beds in 2016, with the capacity to accommodate 54 beds by 2021.

With the commencement of the MHU, visitors and workers to the site will see that the entry to the Lend Lease and Queensland Health site offices has now been reconfigured and is accessible when walking south to the site down Barny Moy Road.

About the project

The $1.8 billion Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital project is a State Government initiative to address the growing health service needs of the Sunshine Coast community. The hospital will open with approximately 450 beds in 2016 with the remaining capacity expected to be commissioned by 2020/21 which will see all 738 beds utilised. The hospital has been planned to allow further expansion up to a total of 900 beds.

The new tertiary facility is being delivered through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) contract with Exemplar Health, a consortium comprising Lend Lease, Siemens and Capella Capital, with partners Spotless Facilities Services. This consortium will design, build and finance the public hospital as well as maintain it for 25 years.
